On September 1, I will take the Amtrak Coast Starliner train to Los Angeles to finish Route 66.
I cut my 2022 tour short in Tucumcari, NM when I got tired of the relentless headwinds, and I am hoping for better conditions this year!
You can read about that tour here.
I plan to reach Tucumcari, NM and we’ll see what happens from there.

I decided to head eastward this time, for a couple reasons:
- Maybe the wind conditions will be more favorable – although I know prevailing winds change over the course of the year.
- There’s no good way to get to Tucumcari with a bicycle.
- I am entertaining the possibility of continuing to Chicago.
The prevailing wisdom is that an early September departure is best for heading east, and the timing worked out, so I decided this was a good year to do it. When I decided to finish Route 66 this year, I didn’t know it was the 100th anniversary of the road, so maybe I will run into some fun celebrations?
