My choices for the day were either a short day of around 38 miles or a long day of over 100 miles. There were thunderstorms in the forecast and an official flood warning, so it seemed like a good idea to opt for the short day.
I stopped at the famous Jack Rabbit Trading Post. I was surprised I didn’t see any billboards advertising it until I was practically at the store (the old ones must be long gone). When I arrived, I was surprised and a little confused to see a man climbing into what looked like a giant ape costume. It turned out they were shooting a publicity video for the Navajo County Fair, and they were taking the big jack rabbit statue with them. In theory I could swing by the fair, since I’m in Holbrook for the evening, but I have ZERO interest in walking around in the rain!
I haven’t really seen much rain myself, because the thunderstorms usually roll in during the afternoon, once I’m done riding. But it was clear that lots of rain was falling somewhere, because when I crossed the Little Colorado River, it was brown with silt and carrying all kinds of floating debris.
I started watching the weather radar when I spotted thunderstorms a few miles off, and I knew I’d have to stop lollygagging and keep moving if I wanted to stay dry. It sprinkled a few times, but I made it to my motel before the rain started in earnest. My room isn’t ready yet, so I’m sitting in the lobby, hiding from the weather, and writing this.
